Multi-site connectivity

Multi-site connectivity for businesses with several sites: site-to-site VPN, SD-WAN style failover, 4G and 5G backup and central UniFi or Meraki management.

In short

Multi-site connectivity links your offices, depots and remote workers into one private network: site-to-site VPNs between locations, automatic failover to a second line or 4G/5G if the main connection fails, and central management through UniFi or Cisco Meraki. Dig IT Solutions runs exactly this for Mr Plant Hire's multiple depots, linked to its Enfield head office, with teleworker gateways for staff at home.

When you need this

Signs this is the right conversation

  • Each site has its own broadband and its own problems.
  • When the line at one depot drops, that depot stops trading.
  • Staff at branch offices can't reach the server at head office.
  • Our remote workers use a VPN client that half of them can't get working.
  • Nobody can see the network at the other sites without driving there.

Scope

What we deliver

  • 01

    Site-to-site VPN

Encrypted tunnels between locations so every site is on one private network, with routing that keeps traffic local where it should be.

  • 02

    Automatic failover

Dual-WAN gateways that switch to a second broadband line or a 4G/5G connection when the primary fails, and back again when it recovers.

  • 03

    4G/5G backup

Cellular backup with a business data plan and an external antenna where signal is weak, so an ISP outage is an inconvenience rather than a shutdown.

  • 04

    Central management

All sites managed from one UniFi or Meraki console, with alerts, configuration templates and remote troubleshooting.

  • 05

    Teleworker gateways

Small managed gateways for home-based staff that extend the company network to their desk without a software VPN client.

  • 06

    Connectivity procurement

Leased lines, FTTP, business broadband and cellular services specified and ordered with realistic lead times.

Outcomes

What you get out of it

  • Every site behaves like part of one network.
  • An ISP outage doesn't stop a site from working.
  • Faults visible and often fixed remotely.
  • Head office systems reachable from anywhere, securely.

FAQ

Questions we are asked

Straight answers. If yours is not here, call 020 8482 4020 or 01992 939 365 and ask an engineer.
What is a site-to-site VPN?
A site-to-site VPN is an encrypted tunnel between the firewalls or gateways at two locations, so devices on each site can reach each other as if they were on the same local network. Unlike a VPN client on a laptop, it's always on and users don't need to do anything. It's the standard way to connect a branch or depot to systems at head office.
What does SD-WAN mean for a small business?
SD-WAN, software-defined wide area networking, is a way of combining multiple internet connections at each site and steering traffic across them intelligently, with central control. For a business of a few sites, the practical benefits are automatic failover between lines, prioritising voice and key applications, and managing everything from one console. UniFi and Meraki gateways provide these features without an enterprise price tag.
Is 4G or 5G backup reliable enough for business use?
For failover, yes. A business data SIM in a proper gateway with an external antenna will keep phones, card machines, email and cloud systems running while the main line is repaired. It is not usually a substitute for a primary connection, because data allowances and latency vary, but it turns an outage of hours or days into one you barely notice.
How do you connect remote and home workers?
Two ways. Most cloud-first staff need only Microsoft 365 with Conditional Access and a managed device. For people who need to reach on-site systems reliably, a teleworker gateway at their home creates a permanent secure link to the company network without a software client. Mr Plant Hire uses these for staff working away from its depots. Software VPN clients remain an option for occasional use.
Do you handle opening a new site?
Yes. We survey the premises, order connectivity early because leased lines and even FTTP can take weeks, install the gateway, switch, Wi-Fi and cabling, build the VPN to the other sites and add the site to central management. Our guide at IT support for multi-site businesses covers what to plan and when.
