The Hertfordshire Golf & Country Club: a modern network inside a 16th-century mansion

The Hertfordshire Golf & Country Club at Broxbournebury Mansion, Broxbourne, needed an entire network built from nothing across a large, diverse site whose Grade II listed clubhouse made traditional cabling impractical. Dig IT Solutions designed a UniFi-based network, mesh Wi-Fi, guest access and a camera system, and has supported the club for over five years.

Challenge

The situation

The previous operators had removed all networking equipment and cabling, so the club started with no infrastructure at all: no cabinet, no switching, no Wi-Fi, no cameras.

The clubhouse is a 16th-century Grade II listed mansion with metre-thick walls. Running new cabling through the fabric of the building is slow, expensive and in places not permitted, and wireless signal does not pass through the walls easily.

The site is large and varied: bars, a kitchen, a pro shop, function and recreational spaces and the course itself. Members and visitors expect reliable guest Wi-Fi, and the club needed security cameras across the estate.

Solution

What we built and how we run it

  1. 01

    Get the essentials working first

A core network was set up quickly so the bars, kitchen and pro shop could trade, using UniFi equipment from the outset so everything could be mapped and managed centrally as the estate grew.

  2. 02

    Design around the walls

Wireless was prioritised wherever cabling was impractical. Mesh Wi-Fi access points extend coverage through and around the thick walls without cutting into the listed building.

  3. 03

    Wi-Fi where members gather

Access points were placed in the key common areas to give strong coverage, with bandwidth controls so guest traffic cannot starve the club's own systems.

  4. 04

    Cameras without trenching

A UniFi Protect camera system was chosen and run over the mesh wireless links, avoiding trenching for cables across the grounds. The club's own assessment put the cost at roughly half that of a conventional CCTV installation.

  5. 05

    Protect the workstations

Monitoring and protection were installed on the club's computers to secure them against online threats and track performance.

Environment

The technical picture

  • UniFi network devices for centralised mapping and management
  • Mesh Wi-Fi access points to extend coverage without excessive cabling
  • Access points in key common areas with bandwidth throttling for guest traffic
  • UniFi Protect camera system running over the wireless links
  • Workstation monitoring and protection for the club's office and point-of-sale PCs

Outcomes

  • All essential service areas trading on a reliable network
  • Guest Wi-Fi that improved the member and visitor experience
  • Estate-wide camera coverage at significantly lower cost
  • A mapped, centrally managed network that can grow with the club
  • The Hertfordshire Golf & Country Club course with the mansion behind
  • A green at The Hertfordshire Golf & Country Club at sunset
  • Golf ball on a green in front of Broxbournebury Mansion
