In short

Dig IT Solutions provides managed IT support for construction companies, plant and tool hire firms, groundworks and civils contractors and building services businesses across Hertfordshire, Essex and London. We connect depots and sites with site-to-site VPNs and UniFi Wi-Fi, keep hire-desk and accounts systems available, protect drivers' and fitters' devices and cover yards with CCTV. Proven at Mr Plant Hire's depots for over fifteen years.

Who this is for: Plant, tool and access hire companies with two to ten depots, main and specialist contractors of 20 to 150 staff, groundworks and civils firms, and M&E and electrical contractors. We usually work with the managing director, operations director, finance director or the depot manager who inherited the IT along with the keys.

Sector pressures

What keeps construction & plant hire up at night

  1. 01

Depots, yards and site cabins are not offices

A steel-framed shed with a hire desk at the front, a workshop at the back and several acres of yard defeats domestic Wi-Fi and short cable runs. Site cabins appear for six months on a 4G router someone bought at a service station. Dust, temperature and distance all need designing for, with outdoor-rated access points, fibre between buildings and a plan for temporary sites.

  2. 02

The hire desk cannot go down

inspHire, Syrinx, MCS-rm and Point of Rental drive every delivery, off-hire, damage charge and invoice. If the link between a depot and the head-office server drops, the desk stops and drivers wait. Multi-site connectivity with automatic 4G failover, and servers that are patched, monitored and backed up, are what keep the hire counter moving.

  3. 03

A workforce that lives on phones and tablets

Drivers capture proof of delivery, fitters log inspections and LOLER records, and site managers approve timesheets from the cab. Those devices get dropped, lost, shared and passed to new starters without a wipe. Mobile device management, MFA and a leaver process that reaches every handset protect both the data and the telematics portals behind it.

  4. 04

CIS returns, weekly payroll and supplier payment fraud

Monthly CIS returns to HMRC, weekly payroll for operatives and a steady flow of subcontractor invoices make construction accounts teams a favourite target for invoice redirection fraud, where a genuine supplier's bank details are quietly changed by email. The NCSC's guidance on business email compromise describes exactly this attack, and the defences are email security, MFA and a verification habit.

  5. 05

    Plant theft and open sites

A yard can hold millions of pounds of plant behind a palisade fence and a padlock. Insurers increasingly expect recorded CCTV with usable retention and remote viewing, and gate coverage that can identify a vehicle at night. Cameras that share the depot network are cheaper to run and far easier to manage from head office.

What we do

How we support you

  • 01

    Multi-site connectivity between every depot

Site-to-site VPNs and teleworker gateways linking depots to head-office systems, the same design we have run across Mr Plant Hire's multiple depots, with 4G failover so a broken fibre does not stop the hire desk. See IT support for multi-site businesses.

  • 02

Wi-Fi that reaches the yard and the workshop

UniFi access points rated for outdoor and industrial use, Cisco Meraki where a client standard requires it, structured cabling including fibre between buildings, and coverage surveys so fitters can scan and drivers can sync from the loading bay rather than the office door.

  • 03

    Hire-desk, accounts and server support

Windows servers patched through our remote monitoring and management platform, local and cloud backups tested by restore, SharePoint for plans, RAMS and certificates, and a costed route to hosted hire software when the on-site server reaches the end of its life.

  • 04

Security for drivers, fitters and the accounts team

Endpoint Detection and Response on every laptop and depot PC, Microsoft 365 with MFA and conditional access, device management for phones and tablets, and email security with DMARC to cut off the invoice fraud that targets construction finance teams.

  • 05

Yard and gate CCTV on the same network

UniFi Protect cameras covering gates, yards, fuel and workshop areas, recorded locally with retention set to your insurer's expectations and viewable from head office or a phone. Because it runs on the depot network we already manage, there is one team to call.

  • 06

Helpdesk, on-site engineers, kit and phones

Remote support via Splashtop for the desk, on-site engineers from Hoddesdon for depots and cabins, HP and Dell laptops and rugged tablets supplied ready to work, 8x8 VoIP routing hire calls between depots, and new-starter and leaver forms for seasonal operatives.

Compliance and expectations

  • Construction Industry Scheme and HMRC

Monthly CIS returns, subcontractor verification and payroll submissions all depend on HMRC logins and on the accounts system being available on time. Protecting those credentials with MFA and keeping the finance PCs patched, backed up and free of malware is the IT side of staying compliant.

    HM Revenue & Customs
  • NCSC guidance on business email compromise

The NCSC sets out how invoice and payment diversion fraud works and what small businesses should do about it. We implement the technical controls it recommends, including MFA, email authentication and filtering, and train accounts teams to verify any change of bank details by phone.

    National Cyber Security Centre
  • Cyber Essentials for tenders and frameworks

Main contractors, housing associations and public-sector frameworks increasingly require Cyber Essentials in pre-qualification questionnaires. Its five controls are the standard we run across depots and sites, so preparing for the assessment is mostly documenting what is already in place.

    NCSC Cyber Essentials
  • UK GDPR, staff data and CCTV

Telematics, driver records and yard cameras all collect personal data. The ICO expects signage, sensible retention periods and controlled access to footage, and we configure UniFi Protect and device management to match.

What clients say about working with us

“Our client Frederick had ongoing issues with slow internet despite upgrading his package. We asked Vince to take a look, and he quickly diagnosed the problem. He replaced outdated Wi-Fi access points with Wi-Fi 7 technology, and the improvement was immediate. Vince is professional, knowledgeable, and great value for money. We highly recommend him to our clients whenever the need arises.”

Switching to us

How the handover works

Switching a multi-depot business means visiting each depot, not just head office. We record every server, router, line, camera, handset and hire-desk PC, find the undocumented 4G router in the cabin, and produce a site-by-site map before anything changes. Handover runs in parallel with the outgoing provider, depot by depot, with the hire desk protected from any change during trading hours. Depot managers get a short briefing and one number to call. The full process is described at our switching IT provider guide.

FAQ

Construction & Plant Hire: questions we are asked

Straight answers. If yours is not here, call 020 8482 4020 or 01992 939 365 and ask an engineer.
How do you connect several depots to one hire system?
We link each depot to head office with a site-to-site VPN over business broadband or fibre, with a 4G connection ready to take over automatically if the main line fails. The hire-desk software and accounts system then behave as if every desk were in the same building. This is the design we have run for Mr Plant Hire across multiple depots for more than fifteen years, and it scales as you open new sites.
Can you provide internet and Wi-Fi to a site cabin or temporary yard?
Yes. For a temporary site we supply a business-grade 4G or 5G router with a managed access point, connected securely back to your main network so site staff reach the same systems as the office. For longer projects or a new permanent yard we survey the site, run structured cabling or fibre where needed, and install outdoor-rated UniFi access points that cover the compound rather than just the cabin.
Do you support inspHire, Syrinx or MCS-rm?
We support the servers, connectivity, devices and identities these systems run on and work with the vendor when the application itself misbehaves. That covers keeping the database server patched and backed up, ensuring every depot can reach it reliably, and setting up new hire-desk PCs and handhelds. When you move to a hosted or cloud edition, we plan the migration around your trading week.
How do we stop invoice and payment fraud?
Invoice redirection fraud usually starts with a compromised mailbox at your end or a supplier's, so the first step is MFA and conditional access on every Microsoft 365 account. Email filtering for lookalike domains and DMARC on your domain reduce spoofing. Then a firm rule in accounts: any change of bank details is verified by phone on a number already on file before a penny is paid.
How much does IT support cost for a plant hire or construction company?
Managed IT support is typically priced per user or per device per month, and for a multi-depot business the number of sites, servers, routers and cameras matters as much as headcount. Our indicative per-device figures, including servers and firewalls, are on our pricing page, and you can build an estimate that reflects your depots at the IT support cost calculator.
Can you install CCTV at our yard as well as the IT?
Yes. We install UniFi Protect cameras that run on the same managed network as your depot, so recording, remote viewing and alerts are handled by one team rather than a separate CCTV contractor. Cameras cover gates, yards, fuel points and workshops, with retention set to satisfy your insurer. Our golf club case study shows the same approach delivered at roughly half the cost of a traditional CCTV install.
