Overview

What Hertfordshire businesses actually need

Cyber security for a Hertfordshire small business is not a product you buy once. It is a set of controls that have to be in place, monitored and kept current, and most of them are unglamorous: endpoint detection and response on every laptop and server, multi-factor authentication that staff actually use, email filtering that stops the invoice-fraud message before the finance manager sees it, patches applied on time, backups that have been restored in a test, and people who know what a phishing email looks like. The GOV.UK Cyber Security Breaches Survey consistently finds phishing to be the most common attack on UK businesses, most of them small firms.

EDR is where we start, because antivirus alone does not detect the way attackers now work. We deploy endpoint detection and response to every client device so that unusual behaviour, such as a process encrypting files or credentials being harvested, is identified and isolated rather than discovered on Monday morning. Alongside it, remote monitoring and management applies Windows and third-party updates on a schedule, and Microsoft 365 is hardened with MFA, conditional access and sensible sharing settings. Email security adds filtering, link protection and impersonation checks. Backups run locally and to the cloud, with Microsoft 365 data backed up separately because Microsoft's retention is not a backup.

Cyber Essentials comes up in almost every conversation with Hertfordshire firms that supply larger customers, from aerospace and pharma suppliers on Gunnels Wood Road to solicitors in Hertford and St Albans. The scheme, run by the NCSC through IASME, checks five control areas: firewalls, secure configuration, access control, malware protection and patch management. We prepare businesses for it by putting those controls in place and documenting them for the self-assessment questionnaire. We are clear that certification is issued through IASME's certification bodies rather than by us, and we do not describe ourselves as certified or accredited.

Being local matters more in security than people expect. When something does go wrong, an engineer who can be in Hertford, Ware or Cheshunt within 20 minutes, or Hatfield and Welwyn within half an hour, can isolate a machine, check the firewall and start a restore while a remote-only provider is still asking for a postcode. We combine that with a security awareness programme for staff and an IT health check to establish where you are today, then a plan that fixes the highest-risk gaps first rather than everything at once.

Why Dig IT

Why businesses choose us for security

  • 01

Security delivered by the team that runs your IT

EDR, patching, MFA and backups are managed by the same engineers who run your helpdesk and network, so there is no gap between the security vendor and the people who actually configure your systems.

  • 02

    Honest about certification

We prepare Hertfordshire businesses for Cyber Essentials and document the controls. The certificate is issued through IASME's certification bodies, and we say so plainly rather than implying an accreditation we do not hold.

  • 03

Backups that have been restored, not just scheduled

Local and cloud backups, Microsoft 365 backed up separately, and restore tests on a schedule. A backup that has never been restored is a hope, and hope is not a recovery plan.

  • 04

Local engineers when it goes wrong

From Hoddesdon we can be on site in most of east Hertfordshire within 20 minutes and across the county within 40. Isolating a machine and starting a restore in person is sometimes the difference between an afternoon and a week.

The Hertfordshire Golf & Country Club: a modern network inside a 16th-century mansion

The Hertfordshire Golf & Country Club at Broxbournebury Mansion, Broxbourne, needed an entire network built from nothing across a large, diverse site whose Grade II listed clubhouse made traditional cabling impractical. Dig IT Solutions designed a UniFi-based network, mesh Wi-Fi, guest access and a camera system, and has supported the club for over five years.

What clients say about working with us

Reviews left on Google by the businesses we support. Several name the engineer who did the work, which is how we like it.
“Dig IT Solutions helped us reorganise our messy network cabinet. They rewired and renumbered all Ethernet ports, installed a secure switch, and set up a shared drive for staff use. Everything was completed efficiently and to a high standard. I'm very pleased with the outcome and wouldn't hesitate to recommend Dig IT Solutions to anyone needing reliable IT support.”

FAQ

Questions we are asked

Straight answers. If yours is not here, call 020 8482 4020 or 01992 939 365 and ask an engineer.
What cyber security does a small business in Hertfordshire actually need?
The essentials are the same for a 10-person practice in Hertford and a 100-person firm in Stevenage: EDR on every device, MFA on every account, email security, patches applied promptly, backups that are tested, and staff who can spot phishing. Those controls map closely to Cyber Essentials and cover the majority of attacks reported in the GOV.UK Cyber Security Breaches Survey. Beyond that, the priorities depend on what data you hold and who your customers are.
Can you get us Cyber Essentials certified?
We can get you ready and take you through it. We implement the five control areas, firewalls, secure configuration, access control, malware protection and patch management, and document them for the self-assessment. Certification is issued through IASME's licensed certification bodies, not by Dig IT, so we do not describe ourselves as a certifying or accredited body. Most prepared businesses complete the assessment within a few weeks of the controls being in place.
What is the difference between antivirus and EDR?
Antivirus matches files against known signatures. Endpoint detection and response watches behaviour on the device, such as a program encrypting files in bulk, credentials being extracted, or a script running from an email attachment, and can isolate the machine automatically. Because most modern attacks use legitimate tools rather than a recognisable virus file, EDR catches what antivirus misses. We deploy EDR on every client device as standard.
How much do cyber security services cost for a Hertfordshire business?
Security is included in the per-device figures on our pricing page rather than sold as a bolt-on: EDR, patching, MFA configuration and monitoring come with managed support. Indicative figures, reviewed October 2026 and confirmed in a written quote, are £17.50 per computer or laptop and £150 per server, each per month. Backup storage, email security licences and Cyber Essentials assessment fees are itemised separately so you can see what you are paying for.
Do we need to back up Microsoft 365 if it is already in the cloud?
Yes. Microsoft keeps your data available, but its retention settings are not a backup: a deleted mailbox, a ransomware-encrypted SharePoint library or a malicious insider can still cost you data beyond the retention window. Microsoft's own shared responsibility guidance on Microsoft Learn makes this clear. We back up Microsoft 365 mail, OneDrive, SharePoint and Teams to separate storage and test the restores.
What should we do if we think we have been hacked?
Disconnect the affected machine from the network, do not switch it off, and call us on 020 8482 4020 or 01992 939 365. We isolate the device through EDR, check what has been accessed, secure accounts by resetting credentials and revoking sessions, and start restoring from backup where needed. If personal data is involved, the ICO expects notifiable breaches to be reported within 72 hours, and we help you establish the facts to make that decision. The NCSC's guidance for small businesses is a good reference.
